Can I live car-light from a new Houston apartment?
You’d like to drive less, maybe share a car or skip one. In Houston, that works most easily near the rail lines. METRORail runs the Red, Green and Purple lines, and the Silver Line runs as Route 433, with no new rail or BRT opening in 2026-2027. Buildings near them are on our new apartments near METRORail page.
Car-light doesn’t have to mean car-free. Many renters ride for work and drive for errands.

What the lines cover
| Line | Where it runs | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Red Line | Northline, Downtown, Midtown, Museum District, TMC, NRG Park | TMC shifts, Downtown jobs, museums and Hermann Park |
| Green Line | Downtown to the East End | East End living and Downtown jobs |
| Purple Line | Downtown to UH and TSU | Campus and Downtown |
| Silver Line Route 433 | Uptown along Post Oak | Galleria-area offices |
Each building on our board shows its line, nearest stop and walk distance, stated as a fact.
Where the savings come from
Parking is the line that changes most. Mid-rise and high-rise buildings with structured parking often charge per space. If you can share a car or skip one, ask whether you can drop the space.
We put parking on its own line in the true monthly. That way, skipping a space shows up clearly when you compare buildings.
Budget for fares, too
A METRO Q Card or app fare replaces some of the parking and gas you’d spend. We leave room for it in your budget.
What car-light living asks of you
- Heat and rain. Houston summers are long. Walk distance matters more in August.
- Errands. Groceries and big shopping trips may need a car share or delivery.
- Late shifts. Check first and last train times if you work nights.
If you work at the TMC, our guide on TMC shift commutes covers Red Line timing and garage access.

Which areas fit car-light living?
New buildings near the Red Line cluster through Midtown, the Museum District and near the TMC. The East End has buildings near the Green Line. Some inner-loop areas off the rail work well for car-light living with biking and short drives. Our page on new apartments in the Heights shows how walking and biking fit there, along the White Oak Bayou trail.
A quick car-light budget check
To see what car-light living could save, compare two versions of your month:
- With a car: parking at home, gas, insurance, maintenance and any tolls.
- Car-light: transit fares, an occasional ride-share or car-share, and delivery fees.
Parking at home is the line we can confirm for each building. The rest depends on your habits. Even keeping a car but dropping a second parking space can make a real difference in your true monthly.
How do we help?
Send us your stop or line, move date and all-in budget. We’ll list new builds by walk distance, ask about dropping parking, and line up tours along one line, the same day during hours.
